Leger's Quarantine by Lacey Dearie

Leger's Quarantine has arrived! It's the 41st story in the Leger Cat Sleuth Mysteries and was released on 18th June 2020, although as always, Amazon list it as being released a day before. This has broken my long standing rule of releasing a book on a Thursday. I really wish I hadn't broken that rule because as my superstitious beliefs told me they would, everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.

Firstly, you might have noticed that Leger's Quarantine is book number 41. I skipped 40 but it's on the way. I just wanted to get this one out because it's limited edition and will only be available as an eBook until 31st July 2020. After that it will be paperback only. That's because it doesn't really tie in with the rest of the series, in both content and theme. It's narrated by Annabella and it's mostly about what she thinks Leger does, rather than a real mystery that happens and Leger is a part of. The question is, how accurate will it be and what will Leger make of it all? You'll have to read it to find out.

All the profits I make from this are going to be donated to essential workers who have helped to take care of us all and keep us safe during the pandemic. They have continued to work while the rest of us have been shielding or locked down and I can't imagine how strange and scary that must have been. So, although the profits won't amount to much, that's where they will go.

I also want to talk a little bit about what's gone wrong with this book. Firstly, when Amazon uploaded it there was a typo in the book's title. I can't see where this came from because everything on my KDP dashboard looks right. I can only assume that this is an error made by someone at Amazon, which is practically unheard of. So, as a result, the listing on Goodreads had an error in it too. Every time I saw it I eye rolled myself into another dimension. So, although I don't like to be too active on Goodreads in my capacity as a librarian, I did go on and change it. Not sure that is technically allowed as it's a site for readers but there ya go. Had to be done.

Then there was the fact that Amazon initially rejected this book. I was furious. Of all the erotica, and violent horror and distasteful subjects people have written about, Amazon chose to ban my short story about a cute talking cat? Nah, I wasn't having it. I re-submitted and crossed my fingers, hoping that the next person who looked at it would think differently and thankfully they did, but it was subjected to some kind of shadow ban in America so that if you search for it, you won't find it. You need a direct link. It's also kind of patronising, thinking that just because it is set in the time of covid and mentions quarantine, that readers in America can't handle it. I think consumers should be allowed to make their own decisions and if they find it too upsetting, they can fire off a one star review at me, which is their right to do, or they can return it for a refund. It's not up to someone at Amazon to decide what is too upsetting for grown adults to read.

I know this Leger book is a little off topic compared to the rest of the series and that could go two ways. Readers could like this one-off change and find it refreshing or they could hate it, and in that case, the good news is, this won't be happening again. But at this point in Leger's journey, it was a chance I was willing to take and I really felt that because I'm changing my approach to writing generally and trying new things, I didn't feel I had much to lose.

It's priced at $1.50 for the eBook on Amazon, iTunes, B & N, Smashwords et al (release will be 1st July) and $4.99 for the paperback (release also 1st July). The cover image is by an artist known only as Niku. I'll update in a few weeks with the totals for how much the book made and exactly where profits have been donated.
